Four things to prepare before departure

You do not need to master all China travel information at once. Finish these four things first and arrival will feel much smoother.

Entry documents

Make sure you can enter China and save screenshots of the documents you use often so you are not searching for them after landing.

  • Passport validity, visa or visa-free eligibility
  • Hotel address, return or onward itinerary
  • Flight details, travel insurance, screenshots of key documents

Mobile data

Whether you can get online after arrival affects maps, ride-hailing, payment, and contact with your hotel. When using a local SIM or local Wi-Fi, some common international apps may not be directly accessible, so prepare backup options in advance.

  • International roaming, eSIM, or local SIM
  • Make sure your phone can receive SMS codes
  • Save hotel details, map screenshots, and key contacts in advance

Payment setup

Metro, taxis, food, and daily spending in Chinese cities depend heavily on phone payment. Set up at least one payment app before departure.

  • Link Alipay or WeChat Pay to an international bank card
  • Carry a small amount of cash and a backup bank card
  • Test a small payment after arrival

Arrival route

Do not wait until you are at the airport to figure out how to reach your hotel. Save the route, the Chinese hotel address, and a backup transport option first.

  • Airport to hotel by metro, taxi, or airport bus
  • Hotel address in Chinese and contact number
  • Your first city transport plan after arrival
