Shenzhen is one of South China's main high-speed rail hubs, with direct trains to Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Wuhan, Nanchang, and many other cities. For many travelers, rail is one of the easiest and most reliable ways to move between cities in China.

When taking a train in Shenzhen, the most important thing is not memorizing the route first, but checking the exact station name on your ticket. The most common passenger rail stations are Shenzhen North, Futian, Shenzhen Station (Luohu), Shenzhen East, and Guangmingcheng. They are far apart, so going to the wrong station can disrupt your whole trip.

Shenzhen has five commonly used passenger rail stations, so the first thing to check after receiving your ticket is the station name. Shenzhen North and Shenzhen Station are completely different places, and the metro trip between them often takes around 40 minutes.

If you have not bought a ticket yet, this is a simple rule of thumb:

  • Need more departures and more destinations: choose Shenzhen North
  • Staying in central Futian and want less pre-trip commuting: choose Futian
  • Staying in Luohu or arriving from Hong Kong first: choose Shenzhen Station (Luohu)

Plan Your Route and Purchase Tickets in Advance

High-speed rail tickets in China usually go on sale up to 15 days before departure. During holidays, weekend return periods, and on popular routes, trains can sell out quickly, so it is better to book as soon as your plan is fixed.

● Busy City If your trip overlaps with a major expo week in Shenzhen, leave earlier than usual and confirm station, hotel, and venue transfers in advance.

Popular holiday trains can sell out very quickly. If your first choice is gone, both Trip.com and 12306 usually support waitlisting, so a returned or newly released ticket may be assigned to you automatically.

Recommended: Trip.com (usually easier for international travelers)

  • The interface is easier to understand for route search, changes, and refunds
  • Supports common international payment methods
  • In most cases, you can enter the station directly with the passport used for booking, without printing a paper ticket

Alternative: the official 12306 platform

Identity verificationPassport holders can buy tickets too, but first-time setup is often more complicated
Interface languageMainly Chinese, with a more limited English experience
PaymentUsually works best with UnionPay, Alipay, or WeChat; overseas cards are less consistent than on Trip.com

If you already use Alipay: you can also check the train ticket section inside Alipay. Some travelers find it easier than using 12306 directly, but for first-time visitors mainly using passports and overseas cards, Trip.com is still usually the safer first option.

Arrive at the station early on the day of departure

Try to arrive at least 45 minutes early. During holidays, at busy stations, or if this is your first train in China, 60 to 90 minutes early is safer.

1. Find the correct entrance: Large stations often have multiple entrances and waiting areas, so check the screens or signs for your hall and boarding gate direction.

2. Go through security first: Bags usually go through X-ray, and you pass through a security gate yourself. Keep your passport, phone, power bank, and metal items ready to avoid last-minute unpacking.

3. Confirm your boarding gate: After entering, keep checking the station screens or your app. Boarding gates can change, and the station display has priority.

4. Wait near the gate early: Many high-speed trains start boarding about 15 to 20 minutes before departure.

5. Check the train number again before boarding: More than one train may use the same platform in sequence, so do not just follow the crowd.

Once the gate closes, you usually cannot enter, and high-speed trains do not wait for late passengers. If you miss your train, go to a staffed counter or check your booking app as soon as possible for change, refund, and fee rules.

How to Exit the Station After Arriving in Shenzhen

1. Follow the “Exit” signs: After leaving the train, usually follow the crowd and the station signs toward the exit channel instead of walking back into a waiting area.

2. Keep your own luggage with you: Train luggage is normally carried by yourself, so there is no checked-baggage wait like at an airport.

3. Pass the exit gate: In most cases you can use your passport or the relevant QR code. If the gate does not recognize it, use the staffed lane next to it.

4. Continue by metro or taxi: If you still need to go to a hotel, attraction, airport, or border crossing, following the “Metro” signs is usually the cheapest option. If you have large luggage, a taxi or pre-booked transfer may be easier.

MethodBest forPayment and notes
TaxiFast exit, lots of luggage, or a very clear destinationFollow the official Taxi signs to the queue; fares are usually metered, and cash, Alipay, or WeChat Pay are common
Ride-hailing (Didi)More transparent pricing or direct payment with a linked overseas cardPickup areas at major stations may be split into zones, so check the exact pickup point in the app

Final reminder: Whether you are leaving Shenzhen by train or arriving in Shenzhen and continuing elsewhere, it helps to have your hotel name, destination in Chinese, and a screenshot of your ticket ready. In practice, three things matter most: the right station, enough time, and a clear plan for the next leg.
