Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport is the city's main airport. For first-time visitors, the most important things to remember are not every detail of the terminal, but a few key points: use Airport Station on Metro Line 11, gates numbered 501–583 mean you still need to continue to the satellite hall, and the metro, taxi, ride-hailing, and airport express pick-up points are all in different places.

This guide follows the full journey in order: booking, getting to the airport, departure, arrival, leaving the airport, facilities, and final reminders.

This guide is most useful for: first-time visitors to Shenzhen, travelers unfamiliar with airport procedures in China, people heading straight to a hotel after landing, or anyone worried about using the wrong station or exit. The four things worth memorizing first are Airport Station, Gate 13, Gate 15, and Gate 17.

Holiday Date Crowd Scope Advice
Shenzhen Major Expo Period
Nov 5, 2026 ~ Nov 10, 2026
● Busy City If your trip overlaps with a major expo week in Shenzhen, leave earlier than usual and confirm station, hotel, and venue transfers in advance.

If you have not booked yet, Trip.com is usually easier for international visitors because the English interface makes booking, changes, and itinerary review more straightforward. Before paying, check four things first: whether the passport name matches exactly, whether checked baggage is included, whether a transit visa may be required, and how you will get from Shenzhen Airport to your hotel after landing.

During holidays, airfares often rise quickly, so it is better to book as soon as your schedule is fixed.

Step 2: Getting to the Airport

Metro Line 11 has both Airport Station and Airport North Station. For T3 terminal access, most passengers should use Airport Station. Airport North is mainly a transfer station and is not the usual stop for entering the terminal directly.

Most reliable option: Metro Line 11

  • From Futian to Airport Station, the trip is often about 30–40 minutes and the standard fare is commonly around RMB 7 in the regular carriage
  • From Airport Station, the first train toward Bitou is around 06:37 and the last is around 00:00; toward Huaqiang South, the first is around 05:43 and the last is around 00:02
  • Line 11 has both regular and business-class carriages, so do not choose the business section by mistake

Taxi / ride-hailing

  • From areas such as Futian or Nanshan, the ride often takes about 30–60 minutes depending on traffic
  • If you want a simpler door-to-door option, pre-booked airport transfer is the easiest version

Step 3: Departure Process at the Airport

For domestic flights, arrive at least 2–3 hours early; for international and regional flights, 3–4 hours is safer. Shenzhen Airport usually stops domestic check-in about 38 minutes before departure, and gates numbered 501–583 mean you still need extra time to continue to the satellite hall.

1. Check your check-in island first: do not just follow the crowd. Confirm the airline and counter area before anything else.

2. Complete check-in and baggage drop: even if you checked in online, leave time for baggage queues if you still need to drop luggage.

3. Go through security or the international joint inspection flow: international departures usually also involve border inspection and customs.

4. Confirm your gate immediately after security: gates 301–378 are in T3, while 501–583 are in the satellite hall.

5. Only then stop for food or shopping: if you are unfamiliar with the satellite-hall route, checking the path first is much safer.

4

Step 4: Arrival and Immigration

1. After landing, follow the Arrivals / Immigration signs.

2. Complete the foreign arrival card as required: Shenzhen Airport has been testing an electronic quick-fill system for foreign arrival cards, and some passengers can auto-read passport details instead of writing everything by hand.

3. Go through border inspection: keep your passport, visa or visa-free supporting basis, and onward travel details ready if needed.

4. Collect checked baggage.

5. Use the red channel if you need to declare items, or the green channel if you do not.

6. Once in the arrivals hall, follow the signs for metro, taxi, ride-hailing, or airport express depending on how you plan to leave.

Step 5: Leaving the Airport

OptionPick-up pointBest for
Metro Line 11Airport StationThe cheapest option and usually a stable choice for Futian, Nanshan, and other key areas
TaxiOutside Gate 13 on the east side of level 2 in the Ground Transportation CenterLate-night arrival, more luggage, or a direct ride to the hotel
Ride-hailingArea A outside Gate 15 or Area B on level 1 of the Ground Transportation CenterApp-based pick-up with more transparent pricing
Airport express busBuy tickets and board at Gate 17 of the Ground Transportation CenterDestinations away from the metro line or trips with more luggage

Common airport express routes include: night services toward Futian / Luohu and Longhua, plus lines toward Longgang, Pingshan, and Guangming. Actual routes and departures may change by time period, so the airport's own notice at Gate 17 should be treated as final.

Payment reminder: do not assume regular taxis accept overseas cards. Cash, Alipay, or WeChat Pay is still the safer preparation.

Useful Facilities Inside the Airport

Bilingual signs: Shenzhen Airport has clear Chinese and English signs, so first-time use is usually manageable.

Food and convenience: both T3 and the satellite hall have food, coffee, and basic retail options, but if your gate is in the satellite hall, confirm the route first before stopping.

Connectivity and payment: free Wi-Fi is available in the airport. Many shops accept Alipay, WeChat Pay, and UnionPay, and some also support Visa / Mastercard, but do not assume every transport service will take overseas cards directly.

Final checklist:

  • For the metro, use Airport Station on Line 11
  • Remember Gate 13 for taxis, Gate 15 for ride-hailing, and Gate 17 for the airport express
  • If your gate number is 501–583, do not assume you are already close enough
  • Holiday airfares usually rise quickly, so earlier booking is safer
